A serious crash has blocked access to Whitianga from the south.

Police were called to the crash near the intersection of State Highway 25 and Moewai Rd just after 10am.

One person has serious injuries and another minor injuries, police said.

NZ Transport Agency said SH25 was likely to remain closed between Joan Gaskell Drive in Whitianga and Ocean Beach Rd in Tairua for hours.

Road users were unable to access the Whitianga township from the Tairua side of the Coromandel Peninsula.

SH25A across the peninsular is also closed for maintenance work.

People needing to travel to Whitianga must take the significantly longer route via Coromandel township until police re-open the road, the agency said.

The detour would add 90 minutes to travel times.
