White Island's gas levels normal

A recent GeoNet monitoring visit to White Island has found gas levels on the island remain within typical levels.

A short eruptive episode occurred at White Island from about August 1 to August 12.

During that time two craters were active within the Crater Lake and a small tuff cone was built.

The water level of the Crater Lake rose rapidly before the activity and has now fallen a few metres.

Vulcanologist Brad Scott said the GeoNet monitoring visit on August 21 was organised to take fumaroles samples, selected springs and to make a ground deformation survey.

Airborne gas flights were also made on August 1, 10 and 17.

The gas flights have confirmed the gas output remains within typical limits for the island.

The ground deformation survey also indicates changes similar to those previously observed as were the fumarole temperatures.

"We continue to monitor the volcano and further bulletins will be issued when activity or observations warrant."
