This weekend could see thunderstorms roll over the Bay of Plenty, but it will still be dryer and warmer than usual.

Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll said this weekend would be mostly cloudy, but as it had been for the year so far, it would be warmer than usual.

Noll said there was a medium chance of scattered showers today , but the day would be humid and warm with temperatures expected in the low 20s.

Sunday brought a higher chance of rain which Noll said could be significant if the thunderstorm passed over Rotorua, but it was too far in advance to know if the storm would make it over the district.

The rain could continue into Monday.

The chance of wet weather could affect events around the district and residents are being told to look to updates as many wet weather options would be decided on the day.

The New Zealand Transport Agency website said roads conditions were more dangerous in wet conditions. It said to check the safety features of your car, slow down, dip headlights and brake carefully.

A police spokeswoman said police continued to remind people to drive to the conditions.
