Work continues to stabilise a slip site on State Highway 36 between Rotorua and Tauranga.

Geotechnical engineers and maintenance crews have been monitoring the slip, off Pyes Pa Rd and down a bank, since it happened on August 28.

A photographer who visited the slip said steel piles had been driven into the ground for stabilisation.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said last month a 35m-long wall made out of around 70 steel piles was being lowered into the ground to stabilise the earth at the site.

At the time, NZTA said traffic was restricted to a single lane, culverts have been blocked off, and an asphalt bund has been installed to prevent any more water entering the site while a long-term solution is confirmed.

The road was still down to a single lane when the photographer visited this week.

The work was expected to be completed early next year.

The Bay of Plenty Times is seeking updated information from NZTA.
