Varied NCEA results for Bay of Plenty

The national NCEA pass rate went up last year, but results for Bay of Plenty schools were mixed. /File

NCEA level 2 pass rates at four Bay of Plenty schools were among the highest nationally for their decile.

Aquinas College in Tauranga came second in the country at NCEA Level 2 among decile 8 schools, with a pass rate of 98.9 per cent.

John Paul College in Rotorua fared even better, with 99.4 per cent of its students passing level 2.

Level 1 pass rates at the decile 7 Catholic school were 99.5 per cent, and 97.4 per cent at level 3.

Rotorua Girls' and Rotorua Boys' High Schools were both in the top five Level 2 pass rates for decile 3 schools, with more than 96 per cent of students passing NCEA at both.

The national average has increased, with 89.9 per cent of students attempting NCEA level 2 last year passing, compared to 88.5 per cent in 2015.

A number of schools nationally had a 100 per cent pass rate.

These were mostly private or high decile schools, although one decile 1 school in Huntly, Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga, achieved this.

The top 5 level 2 pass rates for decile 10 schools were 100 per cent - these were all from private or integrated schools.
