Truck and train collide

A truck driver has walked away from a collision with a train near Te Puke.

The crash happened near Collins Lane and the Te Puke Highway about 11.30am.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the truck appeared to have rolled in the collision.

The driver was out, walking and had been assessed by ambulance staff, he said.

Senior Constable Bruce Gordon, who was at the scene, said it appeared the truck and trailer was moving over the crossing when the train hit the truck, flipping the trailer.

He said multiple witnesses reported to police that they heard the train sound its horn as it approached the intersection.

No one was injured.

The trailer was on its roof on the grass verge and the passenger side of the cab was caved in.

Mr Gordon said a crane had been requested to right the container, which was full of kiwifruit, and the damaged train would be towed back to Tauranga.

The train stopped about 60 or 70 metres from the intersection where the collision happened, a reporter at the scene said.
