About $28 million will be poured back into the Tauranga economy just in time for Christmas, with about 56,000 Trustpower customers receiving their annual TECT cheque.

TrustPower account holders who are eligible for the payout will receive a minimum of $425 in the post by the end of the month, with the average cheque totalling $511, according to TECT general manager Wayne Werder.

Each eligible consumer receives the fixed $425 plus a variable amount based on power usage for the six-month qualifying period from April 1 to September 30 this year.

Mother of three Carlin Hayward said she and husband Bevin viewed the rebate as a type of compulsory savings.

"Usually it gets put towards Christmas stuff," she said.
