After a sweltering summer, the Te Puke swimming pool will re-open on Thursday.

Western Bay District Council closed the pool in December due to a major pump failure.

The council stated on its website the old pump propeller completely disintegrated. When the pump was removed, closer inspection identified a number of pipes in the system that needed to be replaced. The new pump was more efficient so should result in a small reduction in operating costs.

The pump circulated the pool's water through the treatment and filtration system. Without the pump working the pool water quality was unsafe for use.

The council's manager of reserves and facilities, Peter Watson, said installing a new pump and getting everything back to working order had been a great effort from all the contractors involved.
