Tauranga City Council has approved a High Performance Sports Centre strategic partnership between Council Controlled Organisation, Bay Venues Limited and the University of Waikato.

The partnerships was to ensure the sports centre is recognised nationally and internationally as an athlete destination.

Mayor Stuart Crosby said the centre was a "key piece of infrastructure required to transform Tauranga City into a Centre of Excellence for high performance sport".

"Our athletes' success on the world stage is Tauranga's success as they become our local role models that will inspire Tauranga's youth to reach their high performance sporting potential," Mr Crosby said.

The official opening of the centre would be later this month, and would be named: The University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance.
