Tauranga's Mayhem Racing has kicked off the season at the right end of the Meremere Dragway competition series points table.
The Eze Auto Electrics sponsored 1965 Chev Nova, powered by a 565 chev engine, is piloted by Glen Oldfield and is in the second full season of the competitionseries. The car was imported from America as a rolling body, the new engine was sourced also from America, allowing the team the flexibility to build a successful car.
It's a family affair with support of chief crew Pat Oldfield, Glen's father, and Michelle Oldfield, Glen's sister.
Oldfield began the season at the first competition meeting held at Meremere Dragway on October 30 as first qualifier with a 9.092 pass at 139.37mph (224.2km/h). The win at the meeting put him at the top of the points table in the Procomp class.
The second of the competition series, the Top Alcohol and Top Doorslammer challenge, was a twilight meeting held at Meremere Dragway last weekend.
Oldfield qualified seventh with a 9.183 pass at 151.24mph (243.3km/h). The competition looked good with first qualifier Auckland-based Reece Fish in the 1956 Chev recording a 7.985 pass at 179.71mph (289.2km/h).
The first round saw Oldfield up against the Auckland-based Altered of Gary Boggart with a dial-in time of 9.00, and he won with a 9.066 pass at 130.17mph (209.4km/h).
Second round saw Oldfield up against Reece Fish, the first qualifier. Oldfield's pass of 8.919 at 137.96mph (222km/h) with a dial in of 8.70 resulted in a win. Fish achieved a personal best time and the record of the fastest street car in New Zealand.
The final race of the day was against the Te Puke-based dragster of Paul McLeod. Oldfield won with a win at 8.768 at 156.35mph (251.6km/h) on a dial-in of 8.70, while McLeod went through with a pass of 9.082 at 113.12mph (182km/h) on a dial-in time of 8.90.
Oldfield has claimed two trophies in the Procomp competition series in a row. The remaining three competition series are in February, including the Nitro Shootout on February 25, and the fifth in early April. There is also the NZ IHRA Nationals to be held at Meremere Dragway in March.
Oldfield will also be competing at the IHRA Auckland invasion at Masterton Motorplex International Dragstrip next month.
He and other local drags cars will also be on display and performing promotional shows at the Tauranga Airshow this weekend.
