Greerton Swim Club fielded a large team of 31 junior swimmers for the annual BOP 12 and under championships held in Rotorua.

The competition was moved indoors due to the forecast weather bomb on Saturday.

Top junior Louis Fitzjohn (12) took the late change in his stride as he raced to a stunning 14 medal haul with 7 gold and 7 silver.

He started on Saturday by taking 4 seconds of the BOP 400 medley record in 5:17.63 and also set new benchmarks in the 100m butterfly in 1:04.46 (narrowly missing the NZ record) and the 50m butterfly in 29.12.

Louis also anchored the Greerton team to the freestyle relay win along with Tom Jury (12), Ian Pugh (11) and Daniel Harrington (12).

Those relay team members did well individually with Ian Pugh adding a 100m butterfly gold, four silvers and five bronze medals, the tightest being the 50m freestyle where 0.08 seconds covered the first three finishers.

Tom Jury took silver in the 100m butterfly and Daniel Harrington was third in the 200m backstroke in a fine 2:35.85.

Connor Delaney (12) swam a swift breaststroke leg in the medley relay to help the team to silver, behind a strong Otumoetai combination, adding to his individual 100m bronze.

Liam Jury (9) took gold in the 50m butterfly to complement his two bronzes, Elliott Pugh (10) won gold in the 200m backstroke in 3:14.20 along with two other backstroke bronzes while Zac Quin (10) won silver over the 50m backstroke and a tightly fought 100m breaststroke silver.

The Greerton girls also performed superbly with newcomer Shaeli Brewer (10) dominating the butterfly events for two golds and displaying all around talent to collect four silvers and one bronze.

Sarah Cummings (12) had her best ever junior championships, going home with four minor medals including a brave 200m butterfly silver.

She was part of the silver medal winning freestyle relay team that included Hannah Richardson, Brooke Ross and Millie Quin.

Brooke also won an individual 200m backstroke bronze, with Millie going one better over 100m backstroke for silver.

The two were placed eight times between them.

Katie Hills (11) swam a 41.85 50m breaststroke silver while Caitlin Farrell (11) won two bronze medals, as did Arianna Roberts (10).

One of the youngest swimmers, Jessica Pilbrow (9) showed solid improvement to win the 100 breaststroke silver in 1:47.10, along with two bronze medals.

Special mention as the big improver of the meet goes to Dylan Beilby (12) knocking 9 seconds off his 100m and 200m personal best times.

Otumoetai swimmer Liam Shanahan (11) had an excellent competition, swimming in 15 events, winning 11 gold medals and 3 silver medals, and setting many new personal best times.
