"They are harder to get than world medals because it is just so, so physical over here. In New Zealand he can dominate pretty easy but over here no way. Everyone that started that race probably had the ability to run just as fast if not faster than Hamish. The guy he beat actually won it last year so it was pretty tough."
Bryant says Miller is a powerhouse despite having a smaller stature than the boys he beat.
"He has to do two strides to their one but he has a pretty big pump on him so what he may lose in size he makes up for with a big ticker. To win gold at the under-15s at Aussies I always say makes you the world's best."
Miller, a Year 11 student at Bethlehem College, improved on his 4th place at Aussies 13 held on the Gold Coast.
"It is a really tactical race, making sure you stick on their feet the whole way and then running out at the end, which is what I did," Miller said. "Last year I didn't really know what to do. I just ran the race but didn't really think tactically.
"You don't really want to lead out from the front because that is where you are wasting all your energy. If you are behind them you get on their footsteps, which is way easier because the sand is really soft over here."
Miller is part of a famous surf lifesaving family and was rapt to add gold to the collection.
"My sister Jessica got silver and a bronze in 2011 so we now have bronze, silver and gold. I am quite proud."
