The Mount Maunganui Sports Club has a new national champion.

Amy Porter has taken out the C Grade Ladies Champion of Champions title in Wellington after beating out the best C grade club champions in the country.

The result keeps the title in the club that was claimed by clubmate Lauren Clarke last year - the first time the club had sent representatives to the event.

Fellow Mount Maunganui players Luke Cooper and Karen Roberts also performed strongly, with Cooper finishing second equal on countback after a round robin competition and Roberts claiming second place in B grade.

The results are encouraging for the club ahead of a big year that will see them host the annual summer open from December 28-30 ahead of the New Zealand Masters team event in July next year.

Spokesperson Kelly Cox said the club would be busy raising funds for a court upgrade that she hoped would be completed before the national tournament next year.

TECT has granted half the $130,000 needed, with the club to raise the rest.
