It's been quite a journey for Linda Elliott and Speedy Sprat - but both have reached their destination.

Linda has published her illustrated children's book telling the story of how Speedy makes his way from Manukau Harbour to Papamoa to visit his cousin Steady. And Papamoa is where the book will be launched at the weekend.

On his way, Speedy has many adventures, makes new friends and visits surf lifesaving clubs on the route.

Linda has always wanted the book to be used to raise funds for those who keep an eye on people at the beach and, thanks to the sponsorship of BP, all the money handed over for each copy will go to surf lifesaving clubs.

She has written the text and completed all but one of the illustrations and 1500 copies of Speedy's story have been printed.

"He's quite a small fish, but I've become quite attached to him - and I feel like I am releasing him back into the sea."

She says that while the project started small and grew, the finished book is exactly how she envisaged it would be.

The launch on Saturday will be at Papamoa Library from noon and money raised on the day will go to Western Bay of Plenty surf lifesaving clubs.

Linda says the book is suitable for reading to younger children, or for older children to read for themselves, and would make an excellent Christmas present.
