The recuperative powers at the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui were on display on the second day of the Hawke Cup challenge between holders Bay of Plenty and Southland today.

Continuous overnight and morning rainfall made the chances of play look improbable, however at 2.10pm Southland recommenced their turn at bat at 187/5.

The home side bowlers struck quickly taking five wickets in the first hours play, however Jason Domigan continued on from his overnight total of 73 runs to advance to 82, before he was given out hit wicket from the bowling of Sean Davey for 82.

Batting at seven, Jack Mockford posted 22 runs, with Southland eventually removed for 247 just before the tea. Jono Boult was the best of the home side's bowling attack taking 3-44.

The Southland bowlers struck early grabbing their first wicket with Tom MacRury out with just 16 runs on the board with the second Bay of Plenty wicket of Ben Musgrave falling at the 30 run mark.

Bad light stopped play with Bay of Plenty having plenty of work to do on day three, at 70 for the loss of three wickets with captain Peter Drysdale undefeated on 28.

Hawke Cup - Stumps on day two

Southland 247 (JM Domigan 82, SM Fitzgibbon 33, JDYK Ng 23, JB McKenzie 22, JF Mockford 22: JJ Boult 3/44; BR Hampton 2/41, TC Goodin 2/60) lead
Bay of Plenty 70/3 (RPO Drysdale 28no; JL Osbourne 2/18)
