Emergency services at the scene of a collision between a van and a car on SH2.

Two people suffered serious injuries in a crash near Tauranga on Tuesday afternoon.

The two-vehicle crash involving a car and a van caused some delays on State Highway 2, near the intersection with Taniwha Pl, just before 1pm.

Police said two people were taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries but could not provide more information. A St John spokeswoman said there were no reports of serious injuries.

The road was initially blocked at 1pm, but both lanes had reopened by 1.50pm.

The crash, which was isolated to the median strip, caused traffic to move slowly in both directions for a short time.
