Is your pet born to be famous? Do they love the camera - not just because it's something to lick and chew, but because they never take a bad picture?

If that's your pet, now is their time to shine. Entries are open for the 2017 Bay of Plenty Pet of the Year competition.

Entry is free, and the competition is open to pets of all persuasions - from mice and fish to cats and dogs or horses and cows - but you need to get in quick.

Entries close on June 8, and the first 100 photos submitted that meet quality standards will become the finalists.

From there, it's up to the voting public. The photos will be published in the Te Puke Times, Bay News and Katikati Advertiser on Thursday, June 15.

Readers will be able to vote at bayofplentytimes.co.nz or at our offices in Cameron Road, Te Puke and Katikati.

The owner of the pet with the most votes will receive a $300 gift voucher for Addiction Foods.

Competition organiser and Bay of Plenty Times classified sales manager Tara Childs encouraged pet owners to choose a high-quality entry photo that showed a bit of their pet's personality.

"We've been running this competition for four years now. Previous winners had two things in common: a really great photo and lots of human mates to vote.

"The last two winners have been pugs, Smurfy and Hudson. Both very cute, but I reckon the owners of other breeds and species need to step it up this year - the pugs have been hogging the spotlight," she said.

How to enter

- Email a quality photo to promotions@bayofplentytimes.co.nz, or
- Drop a photo off to the Te Puke Times office on Oxford St, Katikati Advertiser on SH2, or Bay of Plenty Times office on Cameron Rd.
- Include your name, contact information and pet's name
- Entries close at 4pm on Thursday, June 8.
