Keen cyclists are invited to take part in a scavenger hunt on wheels to raise funds for charity this weekend.

Keen cyclists are invited to take part in a scavenger hunt on wheels to raise funds for charity this weekend.

The inaugural Great K Valley Adventure Race on Saturday at Kopurererua Valley Reserve is part of Sport Bay of Plenty's Bike Month and will raise funds for the Graeme Dingle Foundation.

Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise events committee chairman Warren Scobie said this was the first organised event with the aim of raising the profile of Tauranga's Kopurererua Valley Reserve.

"It is an under-utilised area, a lot of people don't know it exists. It is upping the profile of the tracks and it is all contained within the reserve so it is a good safe event for people of all ages."

Scobie said the Graeme Dingle Foundation did great work in schools.

The foundation aimed to build school-aged children's self-esteem, promote good values and teach valuable life, education and health skills.

Scobie said the event worked like a scavenger hunt on wheels and covered 31km on the various tracks at the reserve. He said the cyclist who gathered all clues in the fastest time would win.

Riders of all ages and abilities were invited to take part. "The idea has been well-received," Scobie said. "We suspect there will be a lot of registers on the day."

Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless was invited to give out spot prizes following the race and, as a keen cyclist, he said he would possibly join in the race.

Brownless said the race was a great way to expose the reserve to cyclists who may not have known the track existed.
