Former Tauranga City councillor Murray Guy couldn't resist snapping this sand creation before it was lost to the incoming tide this afternoon.

Mr Guy and wife Marion came across the giant guitar during their walk around Mauao's base track, apparently drawn by Tauranga artist and musician Jamie Harkins.

"It's fantastic. I have seen things like this from time to time on social media, on the beaches of the Mount and Papamoa, but this is the first time I've seen it myself."

Mr Harkins is best known for his paintings of surrealist landscapes but offers something different with his 3D beach art in which the beach becomes the canvas.
