Their semi-final will be played at 6am tomorrow (NZT).
Mike Dawson placed 8th in the kayak (K1) heats of the canoe slalom. He logged a best time of 88.91, just 2.06 seconds behind the leader, Giovanni De Gennaro from Italy.
Dawson will progress through to the semi-finals which will be held at 4.30am on Thursday (NZT).
Tauranga's Bryden Nicholas, competing for the Cook Islands in the K1, placed last in the field of 21 with a time of 105.18, ending his olympic bid.
