Rio Day 2: Bay athletes success continues

Bay olympians have continued to shine in day two of the Rio Olympic Games.

The New Zealand women's hockey team, which includes Tauranga players Gemma Flynn, Sam Charlton and Rose Keddell, took on Korea overnight coming away with a 4-1 win.

Flynn scored the third of the team's goals in a penalty corner in the 20th minute.

The women's rugby sevens team, including local woman Kelly Brazier, won their two games overnight progressing through to the semi-finals tomorrow.

The team won their last pool match against France 26-7 and went on to defeat the USA 5-0 in their quarter-final clash.

Their semi-final will be played at 6am tomorrow (NZT).

Mike Dawson placed 8th in the kayak (K1) heats of the canoe slalom. He logged a best time of 88.91, just 2.06 seconds behind the leader, Giovanni De Gennaro from Italy.

Dawson will progress through to the semi-finals which will be held at 4.30am on Thursday (NZT).

Tauranga's Bryden Nicholas, competing for the Cook Islands in the K1, placed last in the field of 21 with a time of 105.18, ending his olympic bid.
