A 16-year-old restricted-licence driver running a red light was involved in a crash in Tauranga central yesterday.

Emergency services responded to a crash, involving three cars, on the corner of 15th Avenue and Fraser St just before 6pm.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter said restricted licence driver had also breached the conditions of their license by carrying a passenger.

He said the driver was ticketed and was taken to Tauranga Hospital, but had since been discharged.

"We do see a lot of breaches of license conditions from restricted drivers or learner drivers that are unaccompanied," he said.

"The issue these drivers need to realise is that if they have a crash and they are insured, their insurance won't cover the cost of the damage because of the breach of their licence conditions."
