At 9am yesterday, returned service men and women walked into the Memorial Park service to applause.

Huikakahu Kaw of Ngati Ranginui, began with the mihi and karakia.

He addressed those who are now a little snowy on top, but still strong in spirit.

"We acknowledge you for all the campaigns that took place in Aotearoa," he said.

He expressed gratitude to the young people who had attended the service, the older people, and everyone in between.

Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout was among those who spoke, acknowledging the soldiers killed at Gallipoli.

"The people of Tauranga continue to honour and respect," he said.

People sat quietly as wreaths were laid, including one from Tauranga Scouts and another from Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton.
