Proposed special housing area, Girven Road

Developer SNG Investments No 2 Limited has purchased the Golden Grove camping ground on Girven Rd and hopes to redevelop the site into a mix of apartments and townhouses as a Special Housing Area.

The site at 73 Girven Road, Mount Maunganui is zoned for residential development.

In August 2014 the Tauranga Housing Accord was signed by Tauranga City Council and the Government to help address housing issues in the city.

One of the ways this will be done is by identifying specific sites in the city that are deemed suitable for new housing - these are called Special Housing Areas.

Developments do not need to be for low cost housing, affordable housing or social housing in order to be progressed through a Special Housing Area.

The proposed development at Girven Road is expected to consist of approximately 66 two and three level townhouses and apartments, as well as a café and childcare facility.

The developer anticipates the townhouses would sell from $400,000.

Responses must be received by 5pm December 18, 2015.

Community views will help inform Council's decision whether or not to agree to the request from the developer and recommend this development as a Special Housing Area to the Minister of Housing.

Decisions regarding this proposal will be made at a Council meeting in the new year.
