People living in Wharf St left a pot of eggs unattended on the stove while they went out last night - prompting a Fire Service callout.
The pot boiled dry and set off a smoke alarm, which alerted neighbours who dialled 111 about 10.15pm.
The property was not damaged.
Meanwhile, a few hours earlier, the smell of burning was detected in enough time to save a caravan from being damaged.
The driver towing a caravan along State Highway 2 at Bethlehem pulled into the Shell petrol station at 11.30am, thinking a wheel from the caravan had caught fire.
Tauranga firefighters were called but not needed. It appeared the caravan's brake pads had begun to burn but the small fire was out before firefighters arrived.
