A portaloo was well involved in flames when fire fighters arrived on the scene in Papamoa today.

Fire fighters from Mount Maunganui and Papamoa were called to the portaloo fire on a vacant section in Monticello Key about 2.10pm.

Fire service northern communications shift manager Jarron Phillips said portaloo fires had been very common in Auckland in the past, due to vandals.

"It's quite common up here in Auckland. A couple of years ago there was a real spate of them."

The portaloo was well involved in flames when fire fighters arrived and some fire had spread to some adjacent grass, he said.
