Porn king Steve Crow is on the prowl for 10 Tauranga women to join his Boobs on Bikes parade in August, despite the outrage that resulted after it was announced the controversial event would be coming to the city.
Mr Crow told the Bay of Plenty Times he wanted to hear
from Western Bay women, aged over 18, who didn't mind baring their chest and maybe even had their own motorbike.
Men, too, were invited to register their interest in taking part in the Western Bay tour on August 4, which will be a promotion for Auckland's Erotica Expo.
The controversial porn mogul, is determined to bring his "Booby Tour" to the Bay of Plenty despite public backlash from community leaders who have branded it "ridiculous" and "inappropriate".
Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby said he would "absolutely not" welcome the Booby tour's arrival and Katikati and Waihi community leaders have since voiced agreement. Tourism Bay of Plenty said it was an event the region did not want.
However, Mr Crow said he and his topless friends would roar into town regardless: "They don't even register in my radar, because I don't have time for religion."
He said six international "stars" would join parades in Tauranga, Waihi and Katikati, including Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, who had a supposed affair with Jesse James, the now ex-husband of actress Sandra Bullock.
US pornographic actor Ron Jeremy will also feature, as will this year's and last year's Miss Erotica and six Men of Steel male strippers.
Logistically it wasn't easy to bring all parade participants down from Auckland, so locals were needed to bring up the numbers, Mr Crowe said.
Receptionist at Tauranga boutique massage parlour Corporate Angels, Warren Smith, said he was sure some of their staff would be keen to take part.
"Tauranga is a young, vibrant city and people should take it on board with gusto ... It's not like they are openly being fondled, they're sitting on a back of a motorbike."
Mr Crow said he was bringing the tour to the Bay because of demand.
"We've had it in Auckland, we've had it everywhere, and for everyone who doesn't turn up, there are 1000 people who do."
For those who were against it, Mr Crow offered this advice: "Look the other way. It's half an hour of the day ... Don't tell anyone else they can't look at it."
Western Bay of Plenty mayor Ross Patterson said the event was totally inappropriate and nothing but a gimmick.
"It's just ridiculous ... One or two people have said to me 'what a stupid thing to be putting on'."
Chairman of the Katikati Community Board Bruce Duske agreed.
"I can't imagine many people being interested in standing on the side of the street gawking away. I think it's purely opportunist and I certainly won't be there. Those who will be titillated by it will follow it up."
Mr Duske said he thought August was a bit cold for a naked parade, anyway.
"It's worse than a mid-winter swim."
Katikati Community board member Brendan Gibbs, said the Western Bay was letting itself down by allowing Mr Crow to visit.
"It's degrading and we don't need that sort of thing as entertainment."
Hauraki District Council Waihi ward councillor Mary Carmine, said she was not a prude and not against the event, if that was "what turned other people on".
"But I don't think it is appropriate as it cheapens women and leaves a bad taste in my mouth," she said.
Western Bay of Plenty deputy mayor Paul Thomas said the tour was just a way of Mr Crow getting advertising for his expo.
"It seems to me Mr Crow goes out of his way to get as much attention as he can from the community and from the TV and other media. I believe a lot of people in our district won't want bikers riding up and down our streets topless and exposing themselves in this way and I hope it rains and hails on August 4."
Tourism Bay of Plenty acting general manager Glenn Ormsby said the Booby Tour was not a positive for the region.
"It's certainly not what the Bay of Plenty wants to be known for, and I certainly don't think it's good for the community."
