The Papamoa 7-year-old who started his own "pocket money" Samoan tsunami relief fund has raised almost $93,000 for the cause. Liam Porter (left) will present the money to the Red Cross for the Samoa Tsunami Appeal Fund on Monday. The Mount Maunganui Primary School pupil came up with the idea to donatehis pocket money to the people of Samoa after he and his family sought high ground amid fears the tsunami would hit New Zealand. Liam soon got his brothers and friend Emily Pol on board, and the idea gained national traction when they appealed to all children to donate their pocket money. The pair even appeared on TVNZ show Breakfast, where they were interviewed by Paul Henry. The total raised since October 1 included a $25,000 donation from BNZ.
