The person who died in a three vehicle collision in Pahoia yesterday has been named.

Santhosh Kumar Cherukuri, aged 27 of Lynfield, Auckland was the driver of the Isuzu light truck who died in a three vehicle collision on State Highway 2, Pahoia.

Police said that Mr Cherukuri was travelling towards Katikati on State Highway 2 when he was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming truck and trailer unit. A car towing a trailer also collided with the Isuzu light truck.

The driver of the truck and trailer unit and the five occupants of the other car sustained moderate to minor injuries as a result of the collision.

State Highway 2 was closed for over six hours as a result of this crash with traffic being diverted through Wainui South and Esdaile Roads. Police thanked road users for their patience.

Preliminary indications are that distraction or fatigue may have been contributing factors in this crash.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion urged drivers to take extreme care on State Highway 2 between Bethlehem and Athenree as this was the eighth death in just over 12 months resulting from vehicles crossing the centre line on this stretch of road.
