Mount Maunganui man Jonas Ruf's prized caravan was destroyed after getting caught in the path of the tornado on Thursday night.

Strong winds lifted the caravan, which was parked on Hart St, and smashed it into a power pole, leaving it a crumpled wreck.

Mr Ruf's prized possession was stolen earlier this year, but he got it back after launching a social media campaign.

He said he originally bought the caravan to do up and then travel around with.

The first blow of having it stolen was devastating enough, he said.
