Ōropi shooting: Man seriously injured remains stable at Waikato Hospital

A man who suffered serious injuries from an apparent gunshot wound at Ōropi early on Sundayremains in a stable condition at Waikato Hospital.

The ''injuries were from an apparent gunshot wound'', a police spokeswoman said.

St John's ambulance spokeswoman Siobhan Campbell said one ambulance attended after being alerted by a call at 12.02am.

''A patient was transferred to Tauranga hospital in a serious condition," Campbell said.

At 7.30 am the patient was then taken to Waikato Hospital.

Today,a Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman said the patient remained in a stable condition in a ward at the hospital.

Police said in a statement a man was arrested after shots were fired at Seales Rd in Ōropi. The injured man was not the shooter.

Police were alerted to a firearms incident on Mountain Road, Ōropi, about 12am.

On arrival, one man was found suffering serious injuries.

The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed as a precaution and an Eagle unit flew from Auckland to help local staff.

''Shortly before 1am a firearm was discharged again near Seales Rd, hitting a civilian vehicle. No one was harmed.''

One person was found at an address in Ōropi and after negotiations, was arrested about 3.30am, police said.

A 51-year-old man has been charged with recklessly discharging a firearm and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Monday. A scene examination was also carried out on Sunday by police.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident a person has died after a single-vehicle crash on Ōropi Rd in Ōropi on Saturday.

Police were called to the crash at 1.25pm.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and is working with the Western Bay road policing team to establish the cause of the crash.

The name of the decreased had not been released last night.
