Oropi Rd crash damages power pole, cutting power

Around 900 people in Tauranga were left without power early this morning after a car crashed into a power pole.

Police were called to the scene at 6.20am after reports a car had collided with a power pole on Oropi Rd, between SH29A and Cheyne Rd.

The driver was uninjured, a police spokesperson said.

“The car had been moved off the road, so was not blocking.

“The bottom of the power pole appears to have been damaged in the crash and it was reported to be on a slight lean.”

Police said the power company was notified and was at the scene.

According to Powerco, power went off around 6am following the crash.

“Power has been restored to 872 customers, out of a total of 903 affected,” a spokesperson said.

“Crews were working to restore power for the remaining 31 customers as quickly and safely as possible.”
