Of late, I have been hearing a similar theme amongst people coming through the animal shelter.

With no cat whisperers or consultants at hand, I am catapulting myself into this topic, guided by other SPCA staff and my own take on things.

The subject being "are our cats our friends or foes"?

Generally, people take on a pet to love and to get love in return. To be more than a food dispenser, but developing a meaningful connection.

But what about when the cat has to be tip-toed around? The nervous Nelly; the super sensitive delicate flower; the cat that you have to creep up the edge of the hall to pass, hopefully without incident.

The cat that does not like to be picked up, let alone cuddled or like mine has a very short tolerance level.

What about the cat you long to jump on your lap, even just for the ad break! But alas, it seems to be the lone ranger and not interested in you or the other family members (except for the hand that feeds them of course).

Cats are generally speaking, laws unto themselves and don't like being told what to do. By choice they do what they want, when they want.

Cats all have unique personalities, things they fancy and the 'no-go' zones. Some of our cats claim the 'head of security' position in our homes and others enjoy the 'downtime' benefits that being a feline offers.

Some are 'ground cats' and others can't get enough of your physical close encounters. Understanding, that just like people with different attributes, cats' personalities are all very different too.

They are smart creatures of routine and habit. It is possible to change some aspects but it takes commitment and time and sometimes a change of attitude.

If you have a grumpy, unhappy, low tolerant or aggressive cat, it would be worth considering a vet check. This may reveal any number of reasons for such behaviours.

If you have any further queries, feel free to email me at Tauranga.education@spca.nz.
