If you haven't finished your Christmas shopping yet, don't despair. There are still plenty of options.
Shopping malls across Tauranga have extended their hours and downtown Tauranga will be open later than usual on Thursday.
Fraser Cove Shopping Centre will have two late nights - tomorrow and Thursday - with retail stores
staying open until 9pm, the exception being The Warehouse, which will be open until midnight.
Centre manager Marie Mischewski said the Fraser Cove carpark had been noticeably fuller since the beginning of the month.
"Rain, hail or snow, at the moment people are concentrating on one thing. They have been since December 1."
Ms Mischewski attributed the earlier than usual Christmas shopping spree to the large number of sales. "So many stores are in big sale mode, which is encouraging people to shop when the bargains are there."
Bayfair Shopping Centre is open until 9pm for the next three nights and 6pm on Friday.
Across the road, Bayfair Home Zone Centre does not have a designated late night, but centre manager Julie Nicholson said stores were free to extend their hours if they chose to do so.
Harvey Norman was open until 7.30pm today, tomorrow and Thursday.
Likewise Bay Central Shopping Centre in Chapel St does not require its shops to be open late but Briscoes will stay open until 10pm until Thursday.
Papamoa's Fashion Island will be open until 8pm tomorrow and Thursday but the pace has already picked up, said centre manager Jane Spearman. "People have been looking up until now but now they're actually starting to spend. The carpark is fairly full."
At Palm Beach Plaza, which is open until 8pm until Thursday and 6pm Friday, it has been "steady", said manager Anne Clarke. "Now the kids have finished school the mums are taking it a bit more leisurely. And I have seen a lot of kids out there shopping for their Mums and Dads and getting quite excited about the gifts they've bought."
Retailers in downtown Tauranga will be keeping their doors open a couple of hours later on Thursday, with a closing time of 7pm and carpark buildings will be open until 8pm.
Tauranga Mainstreet manager Kirby Weis said the 300 retail and lifestyle stores in the central business district had been asked to stay open, although, as it was not a mall, it was their individual choice.
"Everybody gets to do their own thing."
But individual stores would be extending their hours throughout the week, he added.
Last year 130 stores opened on the designated late night shopping evening.
Mount Mainstreet manager Leanne Brown said a lot of Mount Maunganui stores were likely to stay open until six over the next couple of days but there was no official late night. "Last time we did a late night a lot of businesses either couldn't or didn't want to open. We don't want people turning up and being disappointed."
Bethlehem Town Centre will retain its regular hours of 9am to 5.30pm, although restaurants will be open.
David Hamilton, manager Bethlehem Town Centre, said it appeared to be busier than last year, due to more shops having opened and greater economic optimism.
