One person has been seriously injured in a crash near Katikati.

Emergency services were first called to the scene at the corner of Willoughby Rd and State Highway 2, Tahawai, at 6.35pm Monday.

A police spokeswoman said one person was initially trapped.

A St John spokeswoman said two people were taken by road to Tauranga Hospital, one with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries.

Three ambulances, a rapid response unit and a helicopter were sent to the scene, however the helicopter was not required.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand sent two appliances to the scene.
