McDonald's is expected to be given council permission today, or tomorrow, to build a large new outlet with drive-through in Mount Maunganui.
Tauranga City Council principal planner of environmental planning Rebecca Perrett said traffic engineers had assessed the resource consent and it was expected to be given the stamp of approval
early this week.
The site for the outlet is a former petrol station, near the intersection of Maunganui Rd and Matai St. Because the site was zoned for commercial business, the council's only concerns involved traffic safety, traffic generation and parking.
A McDonald's spokesperson said an offer to buy the site had been conditional on being granted resource consent. McDonald's closed a premises on Maunganui Rd, near the Phoenix carpark, in July 2005. That was closed because of a lack of space.
