Carrus Mount Maunganui won the Baywide Cup for the sixth time after a battle of attrition against Element IMF Cadets on Saturday.

Needing an outright victory to lift aloft the Baywide first round trophy, Mount Maunganui won the toss and asked the visitors to Blake Park to bat first.

Cadets got away to a good start reaching 42 before their first wicket fell. The Mount Maunganui bowlers then knuckled down to put pressure on the opponents and had the visitors in some difficulty, at five down for 58 runs.

The introduction of skipper Dale Swan, who is the Baywide Cup leading wicket taker, paid dividends with Swan taking 5-28 as Cadets were removed for 94. Daniel Maathuis batting at seven, top scored for Cadets with a hard fought 25, with Sean Davey and Morton Freer both reaching the twenties.

Mount Maunganui also got away to a good start and at 81 for three appeared to be cruising. However the Cadets bowlers had other ideas and the Mount batsmen took seven overs and the loss of two further wickets to reach their target. James Birchall and Donovan Deeble took two wickets apiece.

The Mount victory drew them level with Cadets on 167 points, however their superior run rate during the competition gave the home side the Baywide Cup.

Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys' College claimed third place with a winning draw against New World Te Puke. Charles Williams blasted 94 runs to top score as Tauranga Boys' reached 253/7. Te Puke were restricted to 162/7 with skipper Stephen Crossan scoring 55.

Eves Realty Greerton finished in the top four after defeating Bayleys Central Indians at Smallbone Park in Rotorua. Central Indians were bowled out for 187, with Bharat Popli in fine touch reaching 78. Led by a scintillating 94 from Tom MacRury, the visitors reached their target with four wickets in hand.
