Talented Mount Maunganui designer Jonathan McAlpine of Thorne Group Architecture won a bevy of awards when he pitted his skills against his peers.

He was a standout at the 2017 Resene Architectural Design Awards Bay of Plenty, held in Hamilton on Friday.

The awards recognised outstanding, creative and innovative residential, commercial, alterations and multi-use projects designed by members throughout New Zealand, said spokeswoman Fiona McLeod.

Mr McAlpine's top award for the night was the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award for a Tauriko home.

The Tauriko home's winning interior design was inspired by natural elements that were "current and timeless".

The design was described as having interiors that were a combination of organic materials and a modern interpretation of traditional design.

Judges described the home as "tactile" and noted the subtly lit cedar spine as "the main ordering device in a simple linear plan which is offset by neutral tones throughout the remainder of the house".

ADNZ chief executive Astrid Andersen congratulated the winners, saying Bay of Plenty members had once again produced examples of striking and impressive design.

"In just two years of membership, Jonathan has received a fitting acknowledgement of his skills, talent and commitment to his craft.

"This year the standard and quality of design has been raised again and we are very proud of our members who contribute at this high level in the architecture and design industry," she said.
