Moturiki closed due to high swells

Access to Moturiki (Leisure Island) has been closed this morning due to high swells and the high incoming tide. Mauao base track has been assessed and will remain open.

Tauranga City Council said in a statement the closure would be in place until a couple of hours past the high tide at 9.26am today.

Once the track has been reassessed and no problems are found it will be opened again.

Warning signs advising of the closure are in place. Mauao base track and tracks to the summit of Mauao remain open. With strong winds forecast, people using these tracks should use extra caution.

Tracks have been closed at times earlier this week due to dangerous sea swells.

At times, rough swells breached the Mauao base track and crossed over the sand bar at the back of Moturiki.
