The new arrival in Baypark's super saloon car ranks hasn't wasted any time in driving his way to feature race success.
Tauranga's Terry Corin has brought solid experience from the saloon car class - including 2009 and 2010 third place efforts in the NZ Champs. And in just his thirdtime on track in a new Pro-X Corvette he drove to a clear victory in the super saloon main event at Baypark on Saturday night.
After selling his saloon and taking two years off from racing, Corin ran two meetings at the end of last season in a borrowed car. He took delivery of the new Pro-X chassis four months ago and the combination is a strong addition to the local super saloon car grid.
"On the first night we had an engine misfire and then on the second night things went a bit better," said Corin.
"We did a rethink of everything before tonight and the car is on the pace now and we'll get it better yet."
Corin says his goal for the coming season is to do all the big meetings.
"I'm looking forward to racing at some other tracks. I'm going to do the Burger King Pro Dirt Series, the New Zealand Champs in Auckland, North Islands at Meeanee (Napier) and the New Zealand Grand Prix is here at Baypark."
Corin got to the front early in the feature race and led home former national champ Brent Emerson. Earlier, Dean Waddell and Russell Donovan had taken the heat wins.
Sprint car success went to Hamilton's Dean Brindle who has started the new season on a winning streak. He won at Baypark a fortnight ago and at Western Springs the previous weekend, before making it three in a row against a strong field on Saturday night.
Brindle says he's had a lot of help from California-based New Zealand champ Peter Murphy with set-up tips for the Maxim chassis he's switched to this season.
Brindle took the lead when Aucklander Jamie McDonald tangled with a lapped car while Tokoroa's James Dahm finished second ahead of Mount Maunganui's Bradley Tyrrell.
Six cars led by Brian Fraser raced at the front of the saloon feature and when Fraser made a small mistake he opened the door for Steve Cowling to seize the lead and score his second feature race win of the season.
The front-runners were closely matched in the BOP title for the Youth Mini Stock division. Sam Waddell, 16, led throughout but the pack was always close, Trent Amrein and Hayden Guptill finishing behind him in second and third.
