A motorcyclist caught speeding more than 200km/h on the Tauranga Eastern Link is yet to be found by police.

Tauranga police Sergeant Wayne Hunter said the motorcyclist was clocked at 207km/h on a police radar yesterday but the rider could have reached higher speeds.

The motorcyclist was originally seen riding at 160km/h on the highway about 3.15 pm, he said.

Police pursued the biker but the chase was quickly abandoned because of the high speed and the danger of the pursuit, he said.

Police believe they know who the motorcyclist is but are yet to locate him.

The incident comes as another motorcyclist was caught travelling more than 200km/h in the Waikato.

Last night Waikato police posted on their Facebook page a photo of their radar clocking 232km/h.

A message with the photo said: "Motorcyclist. In shorts. Suspended learner licence.

"Trying to outrun police on a very fast machine. He failed. He realises that now."

Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler, the officer in charge of Highway Patrol for the Waikato District, said the 21-year-old man had been arrested.

He was riding in an 80km/h area when he was clocked doing 232km/h about 2pm-2.30pm yesterday afternoon - 152km/h over the speed limit.
