The upper South and lower North Islands are under a severe thunderstorm watch at MetService, with possible large hail.

Bring your washing in and pack an umbrella, today's going to be a wet one for the whole country.

We may be 12 days into summer but the rain falling over the past week isn't going anywhere fast.

"The word for the day is showers," says MetService meteorologist Hannah Mose.

"Most places are going to see showers today while a front moves up the eastern part of the country."

The New Zealand Transport Agency warned motorists to take care on the wet roads this morning and watch their following distance.

A southwesterly wind flow over the country is typically followed by showers, Mose says.

"Those southwesterly winds are going to be quite strong through the likes of Auckland and we are expecting a gale southerly for Wellington later this morning."

Thunderstorms are also forecast for some areas.

"The risk area covers Nelson, Buller and Marlborough.

"And in the North Island Wellington, Kapiti, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Gisborne," Mose says.

Temperatures in the North Island will stay typically warm for this time of year with Auckland's high forecast for 20C. But in the south they are set to drop.

"In the South Island it is going to be a bit cooler."
