The time has come to sift through possessions and pass on those items unused in years, all in the name of community service.
The Tauranga South Community Patrol, previously called the Night Owls, are looking for items to sell in their monster garage sale this weekend.
Money raised in the sale will
go toward running and maintaining the patrol van, which is used to scout the suburbs in a bid to keep trouble-makers off the street.
Patrol chairman Keith Carter said he was overwhelmed with the level of public support but was still searching for more items to be included in the sale.
"This is a chance for me to thank the community for their tremendous support, without them we wouldn't be where we are but we're still asking people to donate goods that are in a reasonable condition and good working order," he said.
Some of the larger items up for sale in the monster garage sale this Saturday are electrical appliances, arm chairs, a wall oven, a gas fire, shelving units and a double bunk bed set. Other items are also up for grabs, including clothes, books, shoes, an ironing board and a mattress.
Patrol members have been working hard to generate public awareness about the monster garage sale. They've delivered leaflets in mailboxes, put notices on noticeboards and spread the word through word of mouth.
"Next thing you know you get a phone call and someone want's to drop something off," Mr Carter said. "It's unbelievable the amount of support from the community."
Later in the month, Tauranga South Community Patrol will host a Safe Plate Cruise at Mitre 10 in Gate Pa. From 9am-3pm on October 30, Tauranga South Community Patrol members will apply tamper-proof screws to vehicles number plates for a gold coin donation.
Mr Carter said the screws prevented criminals to removing number plates and usnig them when "pinching petrol". He said it was an problem that was potentially happening all the time but wasn't being reported or people weren't aware of it. "A little while ago when petrol went up there was a splurge on it ... but prevention is better than a cure."
If you would like to donate to the Tauranga South Community Patrol monster garage sale, or are interested in volunteering, phone Keith Carter on 5771116.
