Mobil Oil New Zealand will not contest charges laid by Bay of Plenty Regional Council following a major oil spill into Tauranga Harbour on April 27.
Lead country manager Andrew McNaught said Mobil wanted to apologise for the incident and had worked hard to rectify and minimise the impacts ofthe leak to the local environment and the community.
"We learn from all incidents and use this information to reinforce our commitment to continued improvement. We have already made a number of changes to further improve our operations at Mt Maunganui."
Mr McNaught said Mobil believed a restorative justice conference was appropriate and would request the court formalise the process for this to take place.
To date, NZ$2.3 million in clean-up and other reimbursement costs have been paid.
