The black 1914 Dodge Bill Wilson is sitting in brings back fond memories.

His father owned a similar car when he was growing up. He remembers driving his girlfriend in it to go on a date.

Today is a special day for Mr Wilson, it's his 100th birthday. He's grinning from ear to ear as he shuffles over to the driver's seat.

"My father's was cut down at the sides and made into a truck," he says.

His granddaughter, Janet Wilson, contacted the Vintage Car Club to organise a special ride for Mr Wilson to get to his birthday lunch in Mount Maunganui.

The owner of the car, Murray Toms, turned up at Melrose Rest Home to pick up Mr Wilson on Saturday morning.

"It was a real surprise," he says.

Mr Wilson has had an adventurous life.

He was born in Auckland in 1918 and left school at a young age to support his mother and sisters after his father died.

During World War II, he was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force for six years where he was deployed to the Solomon Islands and Fiji.

During this time while stationed in Gisborne, Mr Wilson took the train to Auckland to marry Isobel on December 26, 1941.

The pair were married for 65 years before Isobel passed away in 2007.

Mr Wilson spent most of his life living in Auckland.

He says he enjoyed his career as a coat maker and worked at his business, Wilson Furs Ltd, until he retired at 60-years.

But he soon realised he was not ready for retirement.

"I walked into the Bank of New Zealand on Queen St and got talking to the manager. He asked me what I'm going to do now I'm retiring and said 'why don't you work here'?"

Mr Wilson worked at the Auckland bank for a further six years.

In 2007 he moved to Thames before relocating to Tauranga in 2016 where he lives at Melrose Rest Home.

"I've been to most places," he says. France being his favourite country to visit.

Mr Wilson claims there is no secret to his long and healthy life.

"I think it's his can-do attitude," his son Peter Wilson says.

It's time for lunch so Mr Wilson hops out of the black Dodge and makes his way into Breakers. He'll be picking his favourite he says - fish and chips.

The Wilson Family

Bill Wilson has two children - Bill and Peter, two grandchildren - Janet and Glen and four great-grandchildren - Shaun, Aiden, Taylor, Josh
