A man's body was found in thick bush on Mt Maunganui yesterday, police say.

The man was found by a member of the public, about halfway up the northern face of the mountain, about 7.15pm.

Due to the remote location of the scene Search and Rescue and the fire service were called to help with the man's recovery, police said.

"The walking tracks around the mount were closed for the duration of the operation until the deceased was recovered from the mountain at about 11:30pm."

An investigation was underway to establish the identity of the man and the circumstances around his death.
