A Te Puke man collapsed while working on a building site and was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition today.

The 59-year-old man was working at a building site at Waihi Beach when he suffered a serious cardiac event.

Fellow work mates performed CPR on the man until St John and fire services arrived at the scene, said Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter pilot Liam Brettkelly.

The rescue helicopter flew the man who was in critical condition from Waihi Beach to Waikato hospital.

Mr Brettkelly said the immediate CPR performed helped give the man the 'best chance of survival possible.'
