A man is in a critical condition after crashing his motorbike in Tauranga.

Emergency services are at the crash scene, near the intersection to Tauranga Crossing, on State Highway 36/Takitimu Drive.

Police were alerted to the crash at 7.10pm.

The man was riding a black, Japanese road bike when it crashed at the roundabout with Lakes Boulevard. He was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition.

Police are trying to identify the man and want witnesses to contact them on (07) 577 4300.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and part of SH36 will be closed for some time.

Diversions are in place but The Lakes subdivision can be reached via Pyes Pa Rd.
