Letters to the editor: Library and council buildings don't need replacing

I am at a loss as to why the city would want to demolish what appears to be a perfectly adequate library and council chambers and build a new $47 million library as reported (News, March 19).

Tauranga ratepayers have already been advised that they face a current yearly rate rise of 20 per cent and yet we intend to demolish something that seems to function and, in my view, waste upwards of $47 million on replacing basically like for like.

One would think that there are significant other infrastructure shortfalls in Tauranga that should be addressed prior to destroying something that is already there and doing its job but maybe this is just the easy option as the library service has always wanted a new building from when the old council administration building was demolished due to mould issues.

Prioritising essential spending was something that I thought would be at the forefront instead of doing unrealistic things ahead of doing what should be addressed first. (Abridged)

Hold on to events

Regarding the GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour, congratulations (News, March 19).

What an awesome event which I enjoyed along with my grandchildren.

Yes, there was loud noise at times which added to the event, supported the sponsors and created excitement. My hearing has not suffered as a result.

Sadly, the few people who complain forget that events like this - during the day I might add - bring much-needed revenue into our already struggling economy.

Tauranga needs to hold on to these events because once they have gone, we won't get them back. Time to support the majority.
