A Tauranga woman could be the maker behind New Zealand's Next Top Sausage.

Angie Frires, 29, has just been named as one of the 12 finalists in Hellers' New Zealand's Next Top Sausage 2014 competition.

Ms Frires' 'Lasarnie' creation - combining oregano, mozzarella, thyme, garlic, tomato and red wine - was picked from more than 2500 national entries.

The unique competition encouraged people to dream up their ultimate idea for a new sausage flavour. The mastermind behind the winning concept will earn themselves a trip for two to Paris and have their sausage flavour developed by Hellers and sold in supermarkets nationwide.

The inspiration for the 'Lasarnie' creation came from her mother's infamous lasagne.

"Mum always makes the most amazing lasagne for family gatherings and it has become quite famous. I have tried to replicate it but can never do it justice, and decided to use the key ingredients as inspiration for a new sausage flavour," said Ms Frires, who is studying towards a Diploma in Graphic Design.

Ms Frires will find out if she has created New Zealand's Next Top Sausage on September 15, when the winner is announced.
