Kayaking: Maddy gets gold on the water

TOP CLASS: Maddy Wilson helped Tauranga Girls' College win best girls' kayaking school in New Zealand.PHOTO/FILE

Our team competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Canoe Slalom Championships in Kawerau from March 29 to April 1.

They came away from the championships winning the cup for the best girls' kayaking school once again. The team has now won the cup 13 out of the past 14 years. The team brought home a large number of medals. Maddy Wilson won the trophy for the best Under-16 girl kayaker, winning gold in the U16 C1, U18 C1 team event and U18 C2, silver in the U16 K1, U16 Down River Sprint and bronze in the Down River Classic.

Courtney Williams competed in the Under-18 division and was a member of the gold medal winning C1 team and claimed silver in the K1, C1 and the Down River Classic and also bronze in the C2. Suzy Cumming competed in the Under-18 division and was a member of the gold winning C1 team, she also gained silver in the K1 team event, C2 and Down River Sprint and bronze in the C1. Monique Hawthorne also competed in the Under-18 division winning gold in the C2.

Netball: Recently the Waikairi Maori U17 netball team was selected. This is a Bay of Plenty Maori Representative team and four Tauranga Girls' College players were successful at gaining selection. Congratulations to Ata Rauwhero, Olivia Young, Aaliyah Thocolich and Tayla Fraser-Brown who all made the team.

Equestrian: The equestrian girls competed well at the School Gamblers Tournament held in Te Teko on March 31. Many of the girls placed in the competition and Olivia Pogan received a first place in class 3 on her horse Pintado Tarragon, while Kiana Taylor received a second place in class 2 on her horse Samurai Lady. Kari Wratten-Lowe the equestrian captain competed at Horselands CIC1 from April 10-12, placing third.

Judo: Jade Tuilaepa has returned from New Caledonia where she represented New Zealand in a tournament in which she was very successful. She won a silver medal in the Junior Under-57kg category. She then continued on with the New Zealand team to a three-day training camp with three judo Olympians coaching.
